Questions & Answers

Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy: FAQs

How is hypnosis different from meditation?

Hypnosis is meditation on rocket fuel. It is training the mind to focus on something specific using selective thinking.

Can I get stuck in hypnosis?

No. You simply count yourself out from 1 to 5 and say "Fully alert". The mind cannot go against mind, so you will bring yourself out if that is what you want. Alternatively you can just fall asleep and wake up refreshed.

Can I use self-hypnosis with my other self-care practices?

Yes. Hypnosis can increase their effectiveness.

How can I improve my imagination?

Practice. Imagination is a skill.

How can I improve my responsiveness to hypnosis?

Practice. Program it. Create the proper environment.

Can I lose control in hypnosis?

No, you gain control.

Can I lose consciousness in hypnosis?

You are consciousness; you can never lose it. Hypnosis is a natural state, like reading a book and tuning out what is around you, or driving and not remembering the drive.

Are you going to make me bark like a dog?

If that is your highest goal...

How long does it take for change to occur?

Change begins when you begin! 21 days, practising self-hypnosis twice a day, is recommended for long-lasting results.

Will I cry in hypnosis?

It is possible. In hypnosis we work with the subconscious, which is the feeling mind.

What is empowerment?

Becoming stronger and more confident by changing your negative emotions to positive emotions, and therefore having more control over your own life. Feeling is the secret.

How do I quiet my inner critic?

Become aware of the negative thought, say "Cancel, cancel", and replace it with a positive therapeutic suggestion.

What exactly is hypnotherapy, and what does it feel like?

Hypnotherapy is a natural, educational process that uses guided relaxation to help you reach a state of focused attention, similar to daydreaming or meditation. It is not sleep or mind control. Most clients describe it as deeply relaxing and peaceful while fully aware of their surroundings. You remain in control the entire time.

Do I need a doctor's referral?

Services are for educational and self-improvement purposes and are not a substitute for medical or mental-health treatment. For services related to existing health conditions (pain, weight, sleep, IBS, migraines, autoimmune, surgery) a consultation with a licensed physician is required so hypnotherapy is a safe, appropriate adjunct to your care plan.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies with your goal. For a focused habit like smoking cessation a short program is often enough; deeper work such as weight management or stress is usually spread over several weeks. We tailor the plan at your free consultation.
